How Can I Help?

Above all else, just come! To daven, meditate, sing, shmooze, eat ... Bring your voice, your kavannah (focus) ... and something veggie/dairy for lunch!

Other ways you can participate: Logistics Learning Leading Lunching

Logistics

Transport a torah (also known as “Torah Schlepping” ... lots of good luck for your car)  - from American University or GW or Adat Shalom off River Road.  Or help transport siddurim (prayerbooks), depending on whose house we're at. If you can maybe-possibly help, depending on the day and the place, send us an email. And after learning the latest details, you find it’s not feasible/convenient - don’t worry,  just say so!

Learning

Do you have a reading, a poem, a psalm or a meditation that fits the season or an upcoming holiday? Something you love to share with others? If so, share it with us!

Maybe you recently came across a fabulous dvar torah or some other piece of learning?  We’d love to hear about it during after-lunch learning!

Do you have a creative ritual in your personal tradition?  Or maybe you just learned a new one at a workshop? Show us!

Do you have some info about what's going on in the broader community?  Bring flyers, make an announcement, tell us!

Email us your thoughts!

Leading

There are lots of opportunities to help lead services.

Would you like to help with Davenning? Lead just one prayer, or an entire section of the service! Because Zoo Minyan uses prayer books of its own design, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the text in advance ... email us for assistance.

     Sections of the service:

  • P'sukei D'zimrah (introductory verses, psalms, and songs)
  • Shacharit (the morning service)
  • Torah service
  • Alternative musaf (nigun or meditation for those not using the traditional musaf)

Would you like to Leyn (chant) some torah? Send us an email and we’ll work with you to pick out an aliyah, or part of an aliyah for an upcoming service. There are lots of on-line resources and human helpers ready to assist you with the trop and the text.

Lunching

Our veggie/dairy pot-luck lunches are legendary! (not really, but they’re pretty good ...) Here are some of the things we always like to have - email us to see if there’s a specific need for an upcoming minyan.

  • Challah (bought or baked)
  • Kosher grape juice (kosher wine is good too!)
  • Raw veggies - e.g., baby carrots, celery sticks, grape tomatoes, etc. for dipping and munching during announcements & introductions
  • Dips - e.g., hummus, sour cream, etc
  • For Lunch: Tuna fish?  Cous Cous?  Something from the counter at Fresh Fields? Pasta Salad? Green Salad? Olives?  Fruit?  Desert?
